Call for Ideas: the Seed Laws Toolbox
A supportive seed regulatory framework is crucial for a thriving seed sector. However, many low- and middle-income countries face regulatory challenges that hinder seed sector development. Issues may include misalignment with regional standards or problems with variety release, quality assurance, seed business licensing, and seed trade. A transparent and enabling business environment benefits all seed sector stakeholders, including local seed businesses, domestic enterprises, and international seed companies. Farmers also gain improved access to quality seeds of locally adapted varieties.
In 2022, SeedNL launched the Seed Laws Toolbox, funding four projects in Benin, Iraq, Mozambique, and Tanzania, implemented between September and December 2022. In 2023, SeedNL continued by funding three projects in Benin and Uganda, running from May to December 2023.
Following an evaluation of the 2022 and 2023 outcomes, SeedNL will collaborate with promising applicants in 2024 to secure funding from existing Dutch funds.
Call for Ideas:
SeedNL invites organizations, in collaboration with in-country partners, to submit ideas for resolving seed regulatory bottlenecks. This call is open to public sector, private sector, civil society, and knowledge institutes. Successful applicants will receive support in seeking funding opportunities from Dutch instruments, though funding is not guaranteed. Applications will be evaluated by an independent expert panel, with a deadline of 27 September 2024. More information and project criteria can be found here.
